How to care for your mums:

  • Choose a Sunny Spot for your Mums - while they can tolerate a bit of afternoon shade in our southern growing zone, it is best to place your mums in a spot that will receive sunlight for most of the day.
  • Consistent Watering - mums are thirsty plants; they will need consistent daily watering to maintain optimum health. However, be sure not to water from overhead, it is best to water at the base of the plant to avoid disease. For this same reason, it is best to water in the morning hours.
  • Fertilizing your Potted Mums - in addition to our water-soluble fertilizing regimen, we grow all of our mums with a mild slow-release fertilizer incorporated into the soil - which will continue to feed your mums throughout the season! However, a weekly application of water-soluble fertilizer may extend bloom-time; we recommend Proven Winners® Premium Water Soluble Plant Food, which we carry at the Garden Center.

  • Want to treat your mums like a Perennial? - while we typically treat our mums as annuals, all of the mums that we grow are hardy Belgian Mums and may act like perennials in zones (4)5-9.
    • For greatest success it is best to plant your mums soon after purchasing them from us in the Fall to allow the roots time to get established before we experience a hard frost.
    • Choose a spot that receives plenty of sunlight.
    • Mums prefer rich, well-draining soil, so it is best to amend our Georgia red-clay with a bit of compost at the time of planting - we recommend Espoma® Organic® Land & Sea Compost, which we carry at the Garden Center (add a layer as a top-dress for an extra boost of nutrition).
    • Be sure to water your mums consistently until well-established. It is best to water at the base of the plant, in the morning hours, to prevent foliar disease.
    • It is best to wait until late-winter / early-spring to prune your mums back, leaving roughly 1" above the soil line. Then wait & watch as they re-emerge in late Spring.
    • Apply a granular slow-release fertilizer when the buds begin to form in the Summer, and again once the first flush of blooms has opened, and then add a final dose roughly 6 weeks before our average first frost date for continuous color - we recommend Proven Winners® Premium Continuous Release Plant Food, which we carry at the Garden Center.
